Wentworth Prison is better than Orange Is The New Black(Picture: Channel 5)Everyone loves a bit of Orange Is The New Black – us included. It’s entertaining, a bit sexy, very funny and often uplifting and emotive. But, if we were forced to only watch one prison drama for the rest of our days, then Wentworth, the re- imagining of Prisoner: Cell Block H, would win hands down. Never shying away from the realities of prison life, Wentworth is a hard- hitting drama from Australia that is picking up awards and popularity worldwide. And we reckon is deserves just as much hype, if not more, than the Netflix hit OITNB. Here’s why Wentworth Prison should always be your jailhouse TV choice.
It’s brutally honest. OITNB is empowering to its female characters and we love it for that, but Wentworth shows the life inside a prison warts and all.
Never avoiding the harsher scenes and lines, storylines have included bullying, drug abuse, murder and corruption. It’s an exhausting watch, but it’s certainly an eye- opener and it leaves an effect on the viewer long after the sombre musical number at the end of each heavy episode. The cast is sublime(Picture: Channel 5)Like OITNB, Wentworth is very much an ensemble piece, with a huge variety of characters. All of them have their flaws and their nicer points and viewers have invested in each and every one. That is largely down to the raw and emotive performances of the cast, who have often left us angry, tearful, rolling on the floor with laughter and shocked all in the space of one hour. It’s all about Nicole da Silva. Ruby Rose is amazing.
But sorry, there’s only room for one tattooed prison bae in our lives and it’s the sassy, vulnerable, tough and sexy Franky Doyle. It has television’s best ever villain(Channel 5)Forget Jim Fenner from Bad Girls – Joan . And it makes for some of the best drama. The black comedy. OITNB is full of laughs but Wentworth finds its humour in the darkness, which is a more realistic portrayal of true prison life.
It is never going to be a lol- fest, but some of the cutting lines are delivered with such sass and wit that we can’t help but smile even at The Freak. And the character of Boomer is always good for a chuckle. Except when she’s beating up Liz. Watch It`S Alive Online Hulu. Not cool, dude. 6. The twists. Always expect the unexpected with Wentworth. You know when you start the episode that everything will have changed by the end of the hour and you will be left wanting more.
Damn those tense cliffhangers! It can be sexy. From Franky’s intense relationship with Season One governor Erica to the genuinely touching relationship between Doreen and Nash, romance can be found amongst the violence and heartache of Wentworth. Again, it’s very honest, with the portrayal showing that love inside the prison walls is hard and is ultimately destined to crash and burn. It has atmosphere.
The scenery is grim, as a prison should be. Think Shutter Island and you will be on the right lines of how Wentworth feels. It’s unashamedly dark and grim and the soundtrack only adds to it. It has the strongest females on TV(Channel 5)Franky and Bea as top dogs are everything a strong female character should be. Ruthless to enemies, loyal to friends, funny and resilient, they are inspirational characters.
Liz endures arguably some of the worst trauma and is still everyone’s confidante and she also maintains the biggest conscience in the prison. And Maxine, a transgender character, overcame massive boundaries to become one of the strongest and most likable characters. Even the villain, The Freak, has admirable qualities of unwavering strength. It knows what it is. Wentworth knew what it wanted to be and set its tone from the outset. It has remained consistent in being a gritty drama laden with twists and emotion and its fanbase continues to grow. OITNB, while still one of the strongest new dramas of this generation, often struggles with the identity between black comedy and drama and that’s where it can lose momentum.
If you haven’t given Wentworth a chance yet and you are looking for a drama that will leave a mark on you long after the haunting credits roll, then you’ll never look back after giving it a bash. Expect sensational performances, clever writing, a dark atmosphere and some cutting humour. It’s everything a modern drama should be and more.
